After more than 2 years of waiting, it’s finally (almost) here. Inspired by the design of the Playstation 5, the Playstation VR headset has just been presented by the brand. Even the controllers have been designed with this new sober and futuristic design which combines a layer of immaculate white on the outside and matte black on the inside. The helmet is spherical with rounded edges to best fit the player’s head.
As a reminder, we have known for some time that the helmet in question will be equipped with a 4K HDR OLED screen but also with on-board cameras to capture movement, eye tracking, 110° FoV, Fresnel lenses and haptic feedback on the controllers and headset. The visor of the screen is adjustable, allowing the screen to be moved closer or further away from your face, just like stereo headphones. It is now also possible to manually adjust the lenses between the eyes using a wheel, which can be found on the back of the helmet.
The device will also be equipped with a new ventilation system allowing optimal air circulation like the ventilation grilles of the PS5. Yujin Morisawa, senior art director at SIE who led the design team for the headset explains this in the statement shared by Playstation. “Our engineers came up with this idea to improve ventilation and prevent lens fogging, which will provide players with better immersion in their VR games. You will notice a small gap between the top and the surface at the front of the visor, which contains the integrated ventilation system.”
For the moment, little information regarding the release of PS VR2 has been communicated. The helmet is however expected during the year 2022. The price has not been confirmed but remember that the previous model had been marketed at a price of 350€. With 4K added to this model, we can reasonably expect the price to exceed €400.
