  • Palm oil is in numerous Groceries and cosmetics
  • Palmitic acid, which is found in palm oil, is said to be the Promote spread of metastases

A new study shows how dangerous many foods and other everyday products are. Because palm oil is found in many foods, such as pizza, chocolate spread or baby food. But also in shower gel, hand cream and detergent. According to a new study, the palmitic acid contained in palm oil can promote the spread of metastases – thus the spread of cancer.

The danger of palm oil in food: Palmitic acid can alter cancer cells

Researchers at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) in Barcelona have shown that Palmitinsaure, which is mainly found in palm oil, changes cancer cells. The food industry often uses palm oil as a cheap fat in many finished products. Because: Palm oil tastes similar to butter and gives food a spreadable, creamy consistency. Palm oil is often added to many finished products, sweets and baby food. In the cosmetics industry, surfactants and emulsifiers are made from palm oil components.

But palm oil is not exactly one of the highest quality vegetable fats. It is fairly high in unhealthy saturated fat and low in healthy unsaturated fat. Furthermore, palm oil has long been suspected of contributing to the development of diseases.

The IRB study now shows how palmitic acid promotes the spread of metastases. The results of the study were published in the journal “Nature”.

Why does palm fat promote the spread of cancer?

The IRB researchers were able to use mouse models to find out how palmitic acid from palm fat causes cancer by changing its genome. This increases the likelihood that tumors will spread. The metastasis, or spread of cancer, remains the leading cause of death in cancer patients. The vast majority of these people can now be treated but not cured.

“There’s something very special about palmitic acid that makes it an extremely powerful promoter of the metastasis makes, “said Salvador Aznar-Benitah from IRB the British newspaper “Guardian”. The study, which at Mice showed that palmitic acid promotes metastasis in mouth and skin cancer over the long term.

The study noted that there is so far no evidence that all dietary fatty acids can promote metastasis in cancer. Other fatty acids such as oleic and linoleic acid, so-called Omega-6 and Omega-9 fats, in the Foods like olive oil and flaxseed did not show this effect. More specifically: none of the other fatty acids tested generally increased the risk of developing cancer. However, it is different with palmitin.

Breakthrough in Cancer Research?

In order to spread, cancer cells need certain nutrients. The researchers at the “Institute for Research in Biomedicine” are certain that the cancer cells are primarily dependent on fatty acids. In the experiment with the mice, it became clear that mouth and skin cancer spread more quickly when the animals were given palmitic acid. Palmitic acid appears to renew cancer cells, causing metastasis.

According to Dr. Helen Rippon, executive director of Worldwide Cancer Research, “is a major breakthrough in our understanding of the relationship between diet and cancer and, perhaps more importantly, how we can use that knowledge to develop new cures for cancer.”

Knowing this now could also help improve cancer treatments in the future. Because metastases are responsible for around 90 percent of all deaths in cancer patients. If one learns more now which foods or components of products promote the spread of cancer, one could possibly reduce the number of cancer deaths in the future, as the authors of the study noted.

Can Diet Prevent Metastasis?

Also the World Health Organization (WHO) and Stiftung Warentest have already issued warnings for certain foods in this regard. However, in an interview with the Guardian, researcher Aznar-Benitah stressed that “it is too early to determine what kind of diet that would slow metastasis down could be used in patients with metastatic cancer.”

Researcher Aznar-Benitah says the study could help find ways to prevent metastasis. The researchers are now planning another study with special proteins that are supposed to interfere with the tumor’s response to palmitic acid. “It’s a much more realistic approach that doesn’t depend on whether a patient likes Nutella or pizza,” says Salvador Aznar-Benitah of the IRB. “Playing with diets is so complicated.” For the time being, further investigations would be necessary.

Greg Hannon, Direktor des “Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institutssees the study as a motivation: “Given the predominance of palm oil as an ingredient in foods, this study provides motivation for further studies on how the diet the risk of tumor progression can influence. “

Can’t you just replace palm oil?

Palm oil has been the subject of criticism for a long time and gives rise to the suspicion that it is the emergence of Diabetes, vascular disease and cancer promotes. This is due to the high proportion of saturated fat, as well as at the industrial processingwhich can produce carcinogenic substances. If palm oil is overheated, fatty acid esters are formed, which the “Federal Institute for Risk Assessment” (BfR) has already classified as carcinogenic.

But just a minute Switching to replacement oils is harder than you might thinkas a study by the consulting firm Agripol on behalf of the environmental protection organization World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) At the end of August 2016. Ilka Petersen, WWF study director says: “The simply replacing palm oil with other vegetable oils does not solve the problem, but can even aggravate.

This has to do with the fact that you have to use much larger cultivation areas for soy, coconut, sunflower and rapeseed oil than for oil palm, as these alternatives are clear lower oil yields supply: While oil palms produce an average of 3.3 tons of oil per hectare, rapeseed, coconut and sunflowers only produce around 0.7 tons.
