Perfumerías Avenida has closed the group stage of the Euroleague with a win against Spar Girona (74-63). In the decisive match, Pepe Vázquez’s men did not fail, although the defeat of Sopron at the same time in Italy gave them a place in the quarterfinals in any case.
The locals, in a packed Wüzburg, dominated the match from the first minutes. Closing the area well (Girona added 2 points in the paint in the first 20′), key players like Tolo or Sykes did not finish coming into play, while the rain of three-pointers did damage on the other side of the court. The Salamanca team added 12 of 21 from the outside, with Carleton, Onyenwere and Vilaró (three per head) as the main players.
Coming into the third period, Rebekah Gardner threw her team on her back, adding almost 10 points in a row. However, it was not enough. Avenida, in one of her most complete matches of the campaign, knew how to counteract the talent of the American well, distributing tasks and winning as a team. The same thing that, during a stretch of the campaign, they seemed to have lost.
With the game already decided, 30 seconds from the end, María Araújo suffered a knee injury after an offensive action. The negative note to an afternoon that leaves Spar Girona out of its European adventure.
Sportsmanship above all.
