Paying with the Girocard is increasingly contactless

Dthe Girocard is increasingly used contactless for cashless payment of purchases at the checkout. Meanwhile, paying at the counter has become a matter of course for many, Euro Kartensystem GmbH, a joint venture of the German banking industry, said on Wednesday.

Contactless payment is now firmly established in everyday life and has established itself at a high level. In the first half of the year, 74.3 percent of all Girocard payment transactions were contactless – an increase of ten percentage points within a year. Contactless payment is therefore also the center of all further developments, the company explained. One focus is online trading.

During the corona pandemic, payment in this way became more and more popular. Hygienic reasons also played an important role. The Girocard is the most widespread and used card system in German retail. Banks and savings banks together issued about 100 million cards to their customers.

In the first half of the year, the Girocard was used for a total of around 3.17 billion payment transactions – an increase of 17.1 percent compared to the same period last year, as the company further announced. Sales increased by 17.9 percent to around 134 billion euros. For the first time, the number of electronic cash registers in retail where the Girocard can be used has exceeded one million. Compared to the first half of 2021, this is an increase of approximately eleven percent.
