Electronic cigarette: Massachusetts bans it for four months

An American state bans electronic cigarettes. After the city of San Francisco, Massachusetts officially banned the sale of all electronic cigarettes on Tuesday. The state of Michigan and the city of New York have suspended only flavored products.

The ban takes effect immediately, for four months, until January 25.

Governor Charlie Baker has declared a state of health emergency, the time “to identify what makes people sick and how to best regulate these products to protect the health of our citizens”.

For several weeks, the United States has been experiencing a wave of lung diseases contracted by users of electronic cigarettes. Some 530 cases, confirmed and probable, have been recorded. Seven people died from acute lung diseases. At the end of August, the authorities had identified 193 cases.

Towards a federal measure in the coming months

In Massachusetts, three confirmed and two probable cases have been reported, but around 50 other patients are being analyzed.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently investigating suspicious samples but has not yet identified which substances could be the cause of these acute lung diseases.

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Council passed legislation suspending the marketing of flavored electronic cigarettes.

The bans come just days after Donald Trump announced on September 11 that a similar measure on flavored electronic cigarettes would be taken in the coming months at the federal level.

Spot, the Boston Dynamics robot, (finally) launches out of his laboratory

Spot, the Boston Dynamics dog robot, will finally be able to leave the facilities in which it was developed: the company has just announced its commercial launch.

Boston Dynamics is taking a further step in the development of its Spot robot, which will begin to be sold to professionals.

A versatile robot

After having impressed us through YouTube videos, the Spot robot (formerly SpotMini) will finally be able to leave the Boston Dynamics laboratories. The Verge reports that the Massachusetts-based company is starting to market its invention to professionals. No availability for the general public for the moment therefore, but the project is progressing.

Its price is unknown. We only know that Boston Dynamics agrees to sell copies of Spot to companies that have an idea of operating the robot deemed relevant and innovative. As a reminder, Spot is able to understand directions, follow movement directions, avoid obstacles, and even maintain balance in difficult conditions.

In addition, modules can be inserted in its back to add functionalities specific to a very precise activity: it can be a methane detector if its role is to identify gas leaks for example.

Spot is not a weapon

Despite its slight resemblance to the killer dog robot seen in a season 4 episode of Black Mirror, and the military and security applications that one can imagine, Boston Dynamics excludes any use of Spot as a weapon. ” Basically we don’t want Spot to do anything that might hurt people, even for simulations. », Assures Michael Perry, executive of the company, to The Verge.

It could still be used by the authorities for missions to eliminate explosive threats (bombs) or dangerous materials. A way to avoid endangering a human or real animal.

No rush, however, the Spot is still in ” work in progress “. Despite the feats of which he is already capable, his abilities remain limited to this day. Yes, he can open a door, but not really on his own: he has to be guided and follow instructions. When programmed, it can perform an action perfectly, but without this prior human intervention, it is not able to adapt on its own. This is why cohabitation with humans in a public place is impossible for the moment.

[Vidéo] Boston Dynamics (finally) markets its Spot robot

The long-awaited commercialization of Boston Dynamics robots is finally here. The company announced Tuesday, September 24, 2019 to market, in the form of leasing, its Spot robot. In fact, it’s been a month since Boston Dynamics started shipping Spots to some handpicked customers, according to TechCrunch.

Spot, a customizable robot

Spot travels at a speed of about 5 km / h and can move over rough terrain, even at night. Its battery is quickly exchangeable, it can stand up on its own after a fall and operate in environments ranging from -20 ° C to + 45 ° C. This robot can carry a load weighing up to 14 kg, resist dust and rain. Cameras, including one 360 °, allow Spot to detect obstacles and avoid them in order to move easily in work environments.

In the video posted by Boston Dynamics, we see several Spot robots operating at the same time and appearing to help each other: for example, a robot opens a door and holds it so that another can pass. Spot being adaptable according to the needs of the customer, not all have a telescopic arm allowing to open the doors. The robot’s easy-to-access API allows third parties to develop their own application.

Spot must prove itself

Boston Dynamics is inquiring about the use that will be made by users of the robot, according to TechCrunch. This allows it to find other use cases and possibly offer other options on the Spot robot. In general, the marketing of Spot is very supervised. Boston Dynamics does not offer a turnkey service. Buyers and / or Boston Dynamics should think about the use case before deploying a Spot robot in a given environment. But the company makes some of its engineers available to its customers so that the implementation of the Spot robot goes smoothly, TechCrunch says.

Boston Dynamics is a spin-off from MIT which is now owned by Japanese Softbank after being in the hands of Alphabet (Google’s parent company) for two years. The robotics company has been broadcasting videos featuring its robots for several years.

With this long-awaited commercialization, Spot has no room for error. The four-legged robot must prove itself in a work environment, before its “brothers” Atlas or Handle are also marketed in their turn.

Double 2 makes two with Detroit

The Double 2 event agency created Detroit, a digital content creation and distribution unit dedicated in particular to automotive players. Their first joint achievement came to fruition for the Spanish brand Cupra.

Go from D2 to D3. Here is which obeys a certain logic. And it is not the Double 2 event agency (abbreviated as .d2) which will say the opposite. This independent structure of sixty people launched last June Detroit, a cell focused on digital. The result of six months of work, this department aims to create and distribute digital content for sports and automotive stakeholders in order to give more echo to their events before, during and after. “When we organize an event, we take into account the lived experience, the image it will produce and the resonance it will have, says Nicolas Dudkowski, associate director and co-founder of the agency. From now on, we register this in an even more present way for our customers ”. Especially with regard to image and resonance. “Around an event, we create content that will allow us to share well beyond it”, adds Martin Perraud Wolff, co-director of the structure, also creative director of Double 2. The two targeted business sectors provide Double 2 with more than 50% of its portfolio, including Audi, Porsche or Paris 2024 but also Airbus, Microsoft or Total.

Circuit automobile

In fact, the agency is rethinking its internal organization. Recruitments are carried out to feed the cell. Yes “All of the agency’s talents can work for it” according to Nicolas Dudkowski, it is particularly focused on audiovisual production and, eventually, will represent around fifteen people. For their part, customers have a priori everything to gain from this change. “We are going to share and strengthen ourselves on Double 2 customers”, says Nicolas Dudkowski. However, the cell has a vocation to emancipate itself. “We want to have the capacity with Detroit to create our own actions and to seek our own customers”, continues the leader. The structure has its specific signature and graphic identity. Its name has several meanings: Detroit as the city, capital of the automobile and “City that reinvents itself” according to Martin Perraud Wolff, and like the road at the crossroads of two worlds, digital and real.

While waiting for this big leap, the two structures are working closely together. Evidenced by an event orchestrated at the end of September in Paris for the Spanish brand Cupra, Seat’s ex-sport label, based on the reconstruction of a speed ring (car circuit bend) on a Parisian roof top. Staged by Double 2, the event resonated on social media thanks to Detroit, which managed the audiovisual production and influence aspects.. “The first truly signed project of the two”, Nicolas Dudowski notes. “A good benchmark for our attention. Ambitious. Including devices for capturing and broadcasting the event. Where we get influencers on board ”, explains Nicolas Vernet, co-director of Detroit. An advertisement was shot for TF1 on this occasion.

USA: School resource officer in Florida arrests two six-year-olds – released

In the US state of Florida, a so-called school resource officer has been dismissed after he arrested two six-year-olds in a primary school. The case is being investigated, said the Orlando police. According to the police, the two arrests had already taken place last Thursday.

  • In one case, the man arrested a six-year-old student after she had trampled another person at school. According to the information, however, the student was taken back to school after her temporary arrest because the school resource officer was unable to obtain permission to transfer the girl to a juvenile prison.
  • The other six-year-old child, however, was temporarily taken to a youth prison, according to police. The police driver reportedly did not know that there was no authorization to transfer the child to the facility.

The man was initially suspended, and was released on Monday. Police chief Orlando Rolón apologized on behalf of the authority to the children concerned and their families.

“School resource officers” have the same powers as regular police officers; they are usually assigned to one or more schools by a police authority. There they are supposed to increase security and work in crime prevention, including lectures and mentoring tasks (you can read more about the definition of the term here).

In view of the two arrests, the massive police presence in schools is being discussed again in the USA. Due to several fatal firearm attacks on US schools, the number of school resource officers has risen sharply in recent years.

Soon a measure at the federal level

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently investigating suspicious samples but has not yet identified which substances could be the cause of these acute lung diseases.

Until now, the states of Michigan and New York had contented themselves with banning flavored electronic cigarettes, worried about recent cases of lung disease but also about the propensity of these products to make young people addicted to nicotine. According to a study published in 2017, 20% of high school students in Massachusetts vape and 41% have already tried e-cigarettes. The sale of these products was however prohibited to under 18s until the end of 2018, when the age was raised to 21 years.

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Council passed legislation suspending the marketing of flavored electronic cigarettes. These bans come just days after Donald Trump announced on September 11 that a similar measure on flavored electronic cigarettes would be taken in the coming months at the federal level.

Elsewhere in the world, six countries have completely banned electronic cigarettes: North Korea, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, East Timor and most recently India. In mid-September, the World Health Organization (WHO) welcomed this decision from New Delhi. In a recent report, the international body considers electronic cigarettes “unquestionably harmful”.
