According to initial information, the driver of the semi-trailer was unharmed. However, a worker was injured while recovering the truck. He was flown to the hospital by rescue helicopter.
The cleanup took more than six hours. At around 5.30 p.m. the blockage of the motorway in the direction of Vienna could be lifted again.
Second accident on the A2 on Monday
The driver of a truck loaded with refrigerators ran into a vehicle of the motorway company (Asfinag) on Monday morning on the Südautobahn (A2) between Steinberg and Modriach in Styria. The driver was injured in the collision and flown to the hospital by rescue helicopter. The truck began to burn. According to the Mooskirchen volunteer fire brigade, the semi-trailer was in full fire by the time the emergency services arrived.
The accident happened around 10:20 a.m. in the direction of Klagenfurt. The driver of the articulated lorry may have overlooked the Asfinag truck, which was parked in a secured area for mowing work. Immediately after the accident, the wreck began to burn. Road users who followed tried to extinguish the fire and freed the injured driver.
It was only through the use of foam compound that the teams, equipped with heavy breathing protection, were able to bring the fire under control and extinguish it. 73 firefighters were in action with 17 vehicles.
