Düsseldorf, May 27, 2021 – The OPPO Find X3 Pro 5G is the world’s first smartphone to be equipped with a 5G standalone (SA) -compatible eSIM. The innovative eSIM was developed in cooperation with Thales, the leading international technology company for eSIM connectivity. 5G SA eSIM unfolds the full potential of 5G standalone networks and offers users and mobile network operators the advantages of eSIM technology. With this innovation, OPPO is once again underlining its role as a technology leader: The 5G SA-enabled eSIM is a clear guide for future developments, but is currently not yet commercially available. Tests are currently being carried out with network operators so that users can soon benefit from this new technology.

In contrast to conventional SIM cards, which are physically inserted into the device, the eSIM, or “embedded” SIM, is permanently built into the device. If necessary, users of eSIM devices can flexibly activate the tariff booked with their mobile operator via their smartphone and thus benefit from a reliable and smooth digital experience. In addition to smartphones and wearables, eSIM technology is increasingly being used in networked vehicles and in the IoT, the Internet of Things. The eSIM developed by Thales thus also supports the mobile network operators in establishing the network architecture of the future.

Pioneering the development of 5G technology

Mobile network operators worldwide are using 5G SA networks as a future-proof mainstream infrastructure for 5G. Your advantage lies in low latency times, high flexibility and a comprehensive 5G experience for users. OPPO and Thales are the first internationally to support a 5G SA network on an eSIM-operated device. Both companies play a key role in the development of 5G technology.

“As the world’s leading technology company, OPPO has driven the development of 5G technology from the very beginning. We strive to bring innovative 5G experiences to users. We see the eSIM as an exciting perspective in delivering these experiences, ”said Xia Yang, Senior Director for Carrier Products at OPPO. “As part of our technical cooperation with Thales, we equipped the Find X3 Pro 5G as one of the first mobile devices worldwide with a 5G SA-compatible eSIM.”

Partnership between OPPO and Thales: New opportunities in the 5G era

Thales is a leading global provider of hardware-based eSIM and eSIM connectivity management with more than 200 eSIM management platforms. These are used by mobile network operators, operator alliances, providers and original equipment manufacturers on all continents. With Thales as its most important eSIM partner, OPPO had already launched the eSIM solution in the OPPO Watch, its first smartwatch with integrated cellular connectivity.

In close cooperation, both partners integrated the innovative eSIM solution from Thales into the OPPO Find X3 Pro 5G. The individual integration steps included eSIM server validation and device debugging, verification and function development. In cooperation with mobile network operators, network interoperability tests were carried out to ensure that two lines that are active at the same time (based on a removable SIM and an eSIM) can be used with the Find X3 Pro 5G. For the first time, it was possible to implement 5G SA on an eSIM-compatible device.

“We are honored to continue our partnership with OPPO to validate and commercialize the first 5G SA-compatible eSIM on the OPPO Find X3 Pro 5G,” said Jérôme Bendell, Vice President Thales North Asia and CEO Thales China. “This is an important milestone in the development of eSIM technology. We believe that as eSIM technology evolves and usage increases, further benefits of 5G will be unlocked for both operators and consumers. In particular, the onboarding of 5G SA eSIM helps to maximize trust and resilience for mobile network operators who have implemented 5G core networks and for their customers. “

OPPO began researching and developing eSIM technologies back in 2018 and has since launched several eSIM-compatible smartphones and smartwatches. Equipping the Find X3 Pro 5G with a 5G SA-compatible eSIM underscores OPPO’s strong expertise in the field of eSIM technology. At the same time, they reflect OPPO’s entrepreneurial investments in a rapid rollout of 5G SA networks with the aim of offering users 5G experiences as early as possible.
