The main symptoms of lung cancer are coughing, shortness of breath, and hoarseness. This was reported to Gazeta.Ru by Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chief Physician of the Lapino-2 Cancer Center, Doctor of Medicine Mikhail Davydov.
“Hoarseness for no reason is the most common symptom of lung cancer. It appears due to the growth of a cancerous tumor into the recurrent laryngeal nerve. But this symptom appears even when the disease is seriously neglected. In the earlier stages, coughing and intermittent shortness of breath may be a symptom. Not everyone pays attention to them, especially now, during the COVID-19 pandemic, ”he said.
The doctor recalled that lung cancer is one of the most common oncological diseases in Russia and the world. More than 1.5 million people die from it every year.
“This is one of the most insidious diseases, which in 90% of cases manifests itself in the late stages. Most often, lung cancer occurs in elderly patients over 55 years old, ”added the oncologist.
The main risk factors are smoking, work in which a person is exposed to substances such as asbestos, beryllium, uranium or radon, chronic inflammatory diseases of the lungs and genetics, that is, the presence of malignant neoplasms in the lungs, bronchi and trachea in relatives, continued Davydov.
“It is better to do a CT scan of the lungs in order to exclude a dangerous pathology, especially for those who had covid disease and did not undergo this examination. In general, CT of the lungs is recommended to be done once a year for people over 55 years old, regardless of the presence or absence of symptoms, ”he concluded.
Previously scientists named non-obvious symptom of lung cancer.
