Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-45mm F4 PRO
How the price table works
While OM Digital Solutions unveils the Pen E-P7, a very stylish Micro 4/3 hybrid, the manufacturer is also presenting a new lens in the Pro range: the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 8-25mm F4.0.
A growing range
Equivalent to a 16-50mm lens with reference to 35mm, this new Zuiko will not shine for its extravagant focal range, but more for its constant aperture. It is thus positioned as a good alternative to a sliding aperture zoom which is often less qualitative. It follows on from the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-45mm F4 PRO which is not quite on the same focal range.
With a focusing distance of just 23cm, the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 8-25mm F4.0 PRO offers 0.42x magnification in 24×36 equivalent. This is not macro photography, but the performance remains to be commended and thus improves the versatility of the lens.
A tropicalized lens
Of course, the Olympus lens is also resistant to dust and humidity and even benefits from the still too rare IPX1 certification. Use down to -10 ° is also possible, which is reminiscent of some expert boxes at Panasonic. Obviously, the manufacturer puts forward the use with an OM-D E-M5 Mark III which will undoubtedly be able to cope with such weather conditions.
The optical construction consists of 16 elements divided into 10 groups. OM Digital Solutions specifies using ED, Super ED or EDA lenses which reduce optical defects such as distortions or chromatic aberrations. The diaphragm is made up of only 7 blades, which seems a bit short for fans of ultra silky bokeh.
The Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 8-25mm F4.0 PRO weighs 411 grams with a length of 88.8mm and a diameter of 77mm. Although benefiting from a very wide-angle focal length of 8 mm, the zoom has a thread to mount a filter with a diameter of 72 mm.
Pricing and availability
The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 8-25mm F4.0 PRO always branded Olympus should arrive at the price of 999 €, without the French amount being confirmed yet. The price seems quite high, especially when compared to the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-45mm F4 PRO from the same line sold for € 600 or the 12-40mm f / 2.8 M. Zuiko ED with the largest aperture sold € 899.
Marketing should begin during the month of July. The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 8-25mm F4.0 PRO will be sold with its lens hood and will benefit – like the Pen E-P7 – from a 6-month warranty extension for subscription to the OM newsletter. Digital Solutions.
