New Skoda Octavia RS 4×4 in the test

The abbreviation RS stands for sportiness at the brand. Now the bestseller is also available in this version.

With the introduction of the sporty RS variants, Skoda has completed the model range of the new Octavia generation. Customers are not only spoiled for choice between limousine and station wagon (called “Combi” at Skoda), but can also opt for a petrol, plug-in hybrid or diesel. While the gasoline engine and the partially electrified variant produce 245 hp, the diesel engine has to be satisfied with 200 hp. The diesel variant, however, has one decisive advantage – it is also available with all-wheel drive. And this is exactly what we designed as a Combi for our test. It was shown that the Octavia Combi 4×4 RS TDI DSG largely lives up to its claim as a sporty everyday car with a high level of utility.

Design

Although the RS is visually recognizable, it is not too thick. In any case, he is far removed from puberty showmanship. The plus in sportiness compared to the conventional models can be seen in the black body elements (grill, mirror covers, lettering, etc.), the larger air inlets, the distinctive wheels, the red brake calipers, the somewhat lower sports suspension and the diffuser with integrated exhaust trims.

Drive

The Octavia RS also adheres to its common thread when driving. The car can be moved with agility and pushes hard, but it never looks crude. This is especially true for the comfort mode, which turns out to be the lid of the pot in everyday life. If you want to savor the potential of the powerful engine a little more, it is advisable to switch to sport mode at the touch of a button.
This is where the Octavia RS tenses its muscles: the chassis becomes tighter, the 7-speed dual clutch transmission turns the gears out higher and the throttle response is more direct. This is how the sporty loadmaster is really fun. Only the artificial engine sound is annoying after a certain time, which is why you like to switch back to comfort mode. Overall, the chassis and all-wheel drive handle the high torque very well. This Octavia has no traction problems.

Interior

When it comes to space and trunk volume, RS buyers do not have to compromise. In this regard, the Sport Octavia also mimes the class nerd. The sports seats with integrated headrests and the sports steering wheel are also top notch. Overall, the cockpit, which has been reduced to the essentials, leaves a very harmonious and elegant impression, but it also has its pitfalls. Many functions are controlled via the large touchscreen, which is very distracting. The not exactly sovereign voice control and the slider in front of the display don’t necessarily improve things either. At least, in contrast to VW (Golf 8), Skoda still offers a few direct selection buttons.

Conclusion

Despite the operating weaknesses, the verdict on the Octavia RS 4×4 TDI is positive. The Czech combines good performance with plenty of space and low fuel consumption.
