New Ómicron strains are more transmissible and lead to reinfection

The transmission of covid-19 is increasing in Portugal. The new strain of the Ómicron variant is already dominant and is considered by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control to be of concern.

The European Center for Disease Control and Prevention has included two sub-lineages of the Ómicron variant on the concern list.

One of them should become dominant in Portugal within a week as it already represents 37% of covid cases.

There is still no evidence that these two sublineages cause more severe disease or increase mortality. They are, however, more transmissible and lead to reinfection.

The authorities therefore estimate a significant rise in infections in Europe in the coming weeks.

ECDC is especially concerned about countries with the lowest vaccination rate.
