Former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka made a winning return to the WTA Tour on Tuesday after a two-month absence. The Japanese beat Zheng Qinwen (WTA 51) in the 1st round of the WTA 500 tournament in San Jose.
Now 41st in the hierarchy, Naomi Osaka won 6-4 3-6 6-1 in 2h05′ against the 19-year-old Chinese. The four-time Grand Slam champion had not played since her first-round defeat at Roland-Garros due to a persistent Achilles tendon injury.
‘It’s really cool to come back to play. I hadn’t played since May. I did not know. Someone told me. It’s really good to be back, ‘said the Japanese, who will challenge in the second round the American Coco Gauff (WTA 11), 18, finalist of Roland-Garros this year.
