(CNN) — More than 150 small earthquakes were recorded this Saturday in a rural area near Lake Salton (Salton Sea, in English) in southern California, and the largest had a magnitude of 5.3, a seismologist with the Geological Survey of California told CNN. USA

“There have been 152 earthquakes measuring all magnitudes,” said seismologist Paul Caruso, speaking on the phone from Golden, Colorado.

Caruso said the area is not densely populated and has been known to have “swarms in the past.”

A CNN team in Orange County reported that they did not feel any of the quakes.

The quakes, which ranged from 2.5 to 5.3 in magnitude, occurred in Calipatria, just south of Lake Salton along the San Andreas fault, the USGS map shows.

Calipatria is about 30 miles north of the Mexican border and about 140 miles east of San Diego.

Two earthquakes of magnitude 5.9 struck the Pacific Ocean approximately 143 and 157 kilometers west of the coastal city of Gold Beach, Oregon, after 1 a.m. PT on Friday, the USGS reported.

At least four earthquakes that vary in magnitudes from 3.9 to 5.9 occurred in that area in the last hours, according to the USGS.
