Monkey pox: more than 600 cases detected in Spain, a dozen people hospitalized

In addition to Spain, 28 European countries have reported cases, raising the figure to almost 1,500 infections worldwide. The United Kingdom (524) and Spain remain in the lead. The Ministry of Health in Spain has just updated the cases of Monkeypox.

As feared, the epidemiological situation is not improving. Infected patients continue to increase. In total, according to health data established as of June 16, the number of confirmed cases already amounts to 497, although with the figures updated today from Madrid and Catalonia, the figure rises to 607.

The cases notified by the Spanish Ministry of Health come from thirteen autonomous communities : Madrid, 443; Catalonia, 7; Andalusia, 29; The Canary Islands 26; the Basque Country, 9; the Community of Valencia, 7; the Balearics, 5; Aragon, 4; Galicia, 3; Castile and La Mancha, 3; Extremadura 2; Murcia and Navarre, 1.

All the cases detected are men, with the exception of five women. Age ranges from 18 to 67, with a median age of 36.

According to the Center for Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES), author of the report, eleven cases were hospitalized.

So far, the vast majority of cases are men who have had intimate relationships in risky sexual contexts, “although its transmission to other population groups cannot be excluded”according to the Spanish health agency.
