The New England Revolution ended Atlanta United’s meager playoff run by beating them 2-1 on Saturday at Gillette Stadium.
The Georgia representatives absolutely needed a win to keep their chances alive. However, striker Gustavo Bou forced them into a heartbreaking comeback by breaking the 1-1 tie in the 85th minute.
The Revolution took the lead in the first half when Giacomo Vrioni sank his penalty. It took about fifty minutes for Atlanta to respond, but in no way.
Josef Martinez equalized the score by scoring one of the most beautiful goals of the year in Major League Soccer (MLS). Well fueled by the center of Brooks Lennon, the Venezuelan made a return kick with great power. In front of the net, Djordje Petrovic could only see the ball enter the cage.
Ranked ninth in the Eastern Conference, the Revs are also out of the playoff picture.
Charlotte FC is still alive
At Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte FC pulled off quite an upset by beating the Philadelphia Union 4-0.
The winners of this duel have therefore allowed themselves to continue dreaming of the playoffs, they who are four points behind Inter Miami CF and the last place that gives access to the post-season in the East. The Union, in turn, sits at the top of the same association with 64 points.
In the match of the day, Daniel Rios was spectacular and scored all the goals. It was the very first time the 27-year-old Mexican had more than one success in a Garber Tour match. It is also the first hat trick in Charlotte FC history.
It should also be noted that the Union was forced to play with one player less from the 71st minute, when defender Kai Wagner was shown a red card.
