Microsoft is working on internal processors for the servers that run its cloud services and its line of Surface personal computers, a source said in December 2020.
The cloud computing heavyweight relies heavily on Intel and Advanced Micro Devices to supply chips for its Azure cloud computing services as well as Surface PCs.
The hiring of Mr Filippo implies that Microsoft is accelerating its efforts to create in-house chips for its servers powering Azure cloud services, the report adds.
Mr. Filippo, who began his career in 1996 as a processor designer at chipmaker AMD, previously worked at Intel and UK-based ARM Ltd before joining Apple.
