Leandro Riedi was defeated on his ATP Tour debut. The 19-year-old Zurich man, number 748 and finalist at Roland-Garros in 2020 among juniors, was defeated at Gstaad by Argentinian Federico Delbonis, seeded No.5, by a final score of 6-3 6-3.
Handicapped by a big first serve not yet quite at the level (53% of first balls), the Swiss never really had a chance against an Argentinian thirty-something accustomed to the circuit, No 46 in the world hierarchy and winner of two clay court titles in his career. Riedi ended up hunching over after an hour and fifteen minutes of play.
The Zurich native nevertheless showed some of his potential to the Bernese public. However, he lost his commitment three times out of eight possibilities, while he did not convert any of the two break points he allowed himself. In the end, there was no photo and a statistic shows it: Riedi scored only 49 points, or 21 less than his experienced opponent.
