Up to 79.4% (almost 8 out of 10) of the 56,529 students who have completed the university prescription in Catalonia have already been assigned a place among their preferences. And of these, 58.1% (6 out of 10) have been assigned the first preference for study and center, according to data released this Wednesday by the general secretary of the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia, Josep Ribas.
The first three positions in the particular ranking of careers with the highest cut-off mark for accessing the university in Catalonia are the same (also the order) as last year: the double degree in Mathematics and Physics taught at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) -13,566 out of 14-, the same degree but taught at the University of Barcelona (UB) -13,546- and the Mathematics career at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) -13,218-.
The career that seems to be gaining momentum in this ranking, compared to recent years, is Medicine. Especially if the 2019-2020 academic year is taken as a reference. This is clear from the data made public today by the Department of Research and Universities of the Generalitat.
Compared to the previous year, the presence of Medicine in the top 20 of careers with a higher rating remains the same (there are 7 degrees taught at different universities), but the position in the ranking has improved slightly. While in 2020 they occupied, respectively, the 5th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 14th, 17th and 18th positions, in 2021 they have moved to 4th, 5th, 8th, 11th, 12th, 14th and 17th places.
But if compared to the 2019 academic year, the improvement is even more significant. In that course there were also 7 Medicine degrees taught in different universities among the top 20, but their position in the ranking was ostensibly lower: 7th, 9th, 10th, 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th.
Also the access score has been increasing. For example, in 2019 none of the 7 degrees asked for more than a 13 out of 14. However, in 2020 there were already two universities that required more than a 13 (the UB -Campus Clínic- with a 13.14 and the degree shared by the UAB and the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), with a 13.04.
This year there are still two degrees that require a grade higher than 13, although the required grade has risen slightly: 13.15 (UB / Campus Clínic) and 13.098 (UPF).
Precisely, the degree in Medicine at the UB / Campus Clínic and the one taught at the UAB are two of the three most demanded degrees (1st and 3rd) among students who intend to access this course to university. Psychology at the UB ranks second.
In first preference, a total of 1,764 students have requested one of the 172 places to study Medicine at the UB Clinic Campus, whose cut-off mark was 13,146.
Those who have sought one of the 480 places available to study Psychology at the same university have been 1,185, which has placed the cut-off mark at 9,874.
For the tenth consecutive year, the double degree in Physics and Mathematics at the UAB is the highest entry mark. This high rating is mainly due to the few places available. Only 20 places are offered for this double degree at both the UAB and the UB.
The grade to enter these studies in Catalonia has been gradually increasing, being –except for two exceptions- higher year after year. This year a 13.566 is required at the UAB, while in 2019 a 13.42 was required, a 13.32 in 2018, 13.35 (2017), 13.24 (2016), 13.15 (2015), 12 , 74 (2014), 12.90 (2013) and 12.54 in 2012. In 2011, it was the Medicine degree taught at the UB that obtained the highest access mark with a 12.15, being, in addition, the most demanded grade.
Compared to 2020, the presence of double grades in the top 10 races with the highest grade has lost some steam (not much, really). Yes, they still occupy the first two positions, but the other two double grades in the top 10 grades drop somewhat in the ranking. If in 2020 the double degree in Computer Engineering and Mathematics of the UB occupied the 4th place and the Physics and Chemistry (UAB) the 9th, this year the first one has dropped to 7th position and the second to 10th.
Mathematics gains adherents
Another career that has been gaining strength is Mathematics. As in 2020, this year it ranks third again in the ranking, with the degree taught at the UPC (13,218). Last year this same grade already occupied this privileged place, with a 13.20, while in 2019 it was in fourth place (12.854) and in 2018 in seventh (12.68). In recent years, the Mathematics career has gained followers, increasing the demand for it.
