San Francisco According to a media report, the US consumer protection agency FTC is targeting Twitter. The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that the supervisor is demanding that the short message service hand over internal communications relating to owner Elon Musk.
As part of an investigation, the authority requires insight into detailed information on job cuts and other business decisions. Since Musk took over in October, the FTC has sent 12 letters to Twitter. Initially, no comment was available from Twitter, the FTC and Musk. The company had about 2,300 employees as of January, according to Musk’s latest figures. Before the $44 billion takeover by the Tesla boss, there were more than 7,000.
According to a newspaper report, at the urging of the European Union (EU), Musk must create additional posts to review content on the social media platform. The EU has asked Musk to hire more staff as moderators and fact-checkers to review posts on Twitter, the Financial Times newspaper reported on Tuesday, citing four people familiar with the matter.
Twitter has turned to cheaper, automated methods of monitoring tweets in the wake of the massive layoffs and has eliminated certain manual checks. Unlike larger competitor Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, Twitter doesn’t employ fact-checkers, according to the report. The EU’s demand complicates Musk’s efforts to turn around the loss-making company.
