Ems-Chemie significantly increased sales and profits in the first half of 2021. After the massive slump in the previous year, the specialty chemicals group has already set new records. As Ems announced on Friday, sales climbed from January to June by a whopping 37.9 percent to 1.17 billion Swiss francs. In the previous year, the effects of the coronavirus pandemic had left their mark on Ems and caused sales to shrink by around a quarter.
The recovered sales had an impact on the results. Expressed in figures, operating profit at EBIT level rose 41.6 percent year-on-year to CHF 321 million. And the corresponding margin went up 0.7 percentage points to 27.5 percent.
Record in the company’s history
As a result, sales and operating profit, adjusted for currency effects, reached new highs in the company’s 85-year history, explains Ems.
After the corona-related slump, the global economy is recovering noticeably, writes Ems. This has a positive effect on sales volumes. The company recorded strong growth in the sales market of China in particular.
Car manufacturers contribute to success
Automobile manufacturers in particular rely on Ems polymers as a lighter alternative to steel and Co. because they enable weight and CO₂ savings. Ems’ largest customer market contributes around six out of ten francs to sales. However, the carmakers were recently forced to cut production due to supply bottlenecks.
At the same time, Ems was confronted with continuously rising raw material prices. The company was therefore forced to continuously increase its own sales prices. However, the expanded production capacity and local warehouses ensured that all Ems companies were able to deliver at all times, the company emphasizes.
Nothing has changed in terms of the outlook for the entire year. For 2021, Ems expects higher sales and a higher operating result (EBIT) than in the previous year. In 2020, Ems had sales of 1.80 billion francs and an EBIT of 515 million. (SDA / frs)
