Manoah, Toronto paint Boston white

TORONTO — Alek Manoah struck out seven and threw three-hit ball in seven innings as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 1-0 on Thursday.

Manoah (4-0), 24, walked just one, and the Blue Jays won three of four in the series against their AL East rivals.

In his second season, Manoah posted his eighth win, a streak that dates back to the previous year. The Blue Jays have gone 20-4 in the right-hander’s 24 career starts.

Toronto’s only run was unearned, off starter Garrett Whitlock (1-1) in the third inning. Cuban Lourdes Gurriel Jr. reached base thanks to an error by shortstop Christian Arroyo, when there was one out.

Gurriel advanced to second thanks to a walk managed by Dominican Raimel Tapia, and scored on a single by Mexican Alejandro Kirk, with two outs.

After giving up a single to Alex Verdugo with two outs in the first inning, Manoah retired 12 batters in a row before Arroyo singled in the fifth.

For the Red Sox, the Mexican Verdugo 4-1. The Dominican Rafael Devers 4-1. Puerto Rican Christian Vázquez 3-0.

For the Blue Jays, Cuban Gurriel 4-1 with a run scored. The Dominicans Tapia 3-0, Santiago Espinal 4-1. Mexican Kirk 4-2 with an RBI.
