Luminary recognized (daily newspaper Junge Welt)

Nina Kunzendorf as Ingeborg Rapoport (2nd from right)

The mammoth series goes into its third season and arrived in 1961. Opportunities are of course used to make living conditions in the GDR miserable. The migration of doctors to the west, for example, is an issue. On the other hand, the work of the legendary pediatrician Ingeborg Rapoport (portrayed by Nina Kunzendorf) is also honored. She treats a boy from West Berlin who is seriously ill with polio. Polio was almost eradicated in the GDR at this time thanks to vaccines from the Soviet Union, while the insidious disease in the FRG is still often fatal. When the child’s lung function collapses, Rapoport places it in the “iron lung”. If you want to find out more about the exciting life of the luminary in paediatrics, the documentary “The Rapoports – Our Three Lives” is recommended. By the way, “Inge”, as she was often called, did her doctorate at the age of 102 after she was denied that by the Nazis in 1937 because of her Jewish roots. (mme)
