Of obese patients who received either a 20-minute standard diet advice or a brochure and explanations on 5: 2 intermittent fasting from their family doctor, 18 or 15 percent of the participants managed to lose at least five percent of their body weight within one year. When asked about their willingness to stick to the diet, the participants in the 5: 2 diet group were more likely to imagine this. For them, at least initially, the weekly participation in a self-help group had a supportive effect. Over time, however, this effect was lost.

The authors of the study conclude from their results that general practitioners’ advice on a 5: 2 diet is a suitable option to help obese patients lose weight. Dr. Katie Myers Smith of Queen Mary University in London said, “This is where we were able to provide the first results on the effectiveness of simple 5: 2 diet recommendations in a real-life setting. Although the 5: 2 diet was not superior to traditional approaches to weight loss, participants preferred this approach because it was simpler and more attractive. “

With the 5: 2 diet, you can eat normally five days a week. Fasting takes place on two consecutive days: women should not consume more than 500 calories and men no more than 600 calories.
