Returning the exterior spaces to the home and achieving a minimalist, unified and welcoming design concept was the challenge of Lorna de Santos (AD100 2023) successfully achieved in this project. The apartment, located in the Hermosilla street in Madrid, now has two independent rooms and a common area in which the kitchen, living room and dining room share space. The interior connects with the exterior in an organic and natural way, and both the aesthetic solutions and the pieces of furniture designed by the studio bear the unmistakable stamp of Lorna de Santos: a minimalist and warm style with very personal touches.
In the common area, pieces designed by Lorna de Santos fill the space with warmth, such as the coffee table, the dining table and all the kitchen furniture.

An open and organic space
One of the objectives was to create a distribution that allowed independent spaces. “We wanted it not to be a loft and that had the capacity to easily make spaces independent. We are increasingly realizing that unispaces work for only one person. In the end we need several rooms to to be able to change your mood as well”, explains Lorna de Santos.
Living room, dining room and kitchen are connected through a sliding doors and an exit to the terrace. “Being on different planes, they gave us games of volumes and more original connections and circulations. With the sliding doors we give the possibility to close this open space”, details the designer. On the other hand, a hall connected to the dining room through an arch distributes circulation to the rooms in the private area. One of the most functional solutions in the house can be found precisely in the hall, where some wood paneling they hide laundry doors, machinery areas and registers. “Thanks to the scratching of the wood, it is possible to effectively hide the service areas.”

Connection with the outside
The large windows and the exit to the recovered terrace connect the interiors with the exterior and flood the spaces with natural light. The neutral tones of the materials are maintained in the pieces of furniture, most of them designed by Lorna de Santos, such as the sofa and the coffee table in the living room.

custom furniture
The entire kitchen and its furniture has been custom designed by the studio. The cabinets are made by the carpenter who works with Lorna de Santos. “Although the building is classic, the attic had nothing to do with it, it was an addition. So, we implemented the minimalist aesthetic that characterizes the studio”, Lorna tells us.
