Moscow will not allow the US and NATO to “roll up” the initiative on security guarantees in endless discussions, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. According to him, if they do not respond to the Russian proposals within a reasonable time frame, the Russian side will take measures to ensure a strategic balance and eliminate threats.
“If a constructive response does not follow within a reasonable time and the West continues its aggressive line, then Russia will be forced to take all necessary measures to ensure a strategic balance and eliminate unacceptable threats to our security,” Mr. Lavrov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
The Foreign Minister added that “we will not allow our initiatives to be” rolled up “in endless discussions.”
On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced the country’s draft agreements with NATO and the United States on security guarantees. According to the document, Washington should remove its nuclear weapons from Europe, not create military bases on the territory of the former Soviet Union countries that are not NATO members, and the alliance should stop expanding eastward. These guarantees became the topic of a conversation between the presidents of Russia and the United States, which took place on the night of December 31. Negotiations between Russia and the United States on proposals for security guarantees are scheduled for January 10. The talks between Russia and NATO will take place on January 12.
