Laporta reveals that there will be more signings, his response to Nagelsmann and this is how he expresses himself about Messi’s return: “We have a moral debt”

The president of Barcelona, Joan Laporta, expressed in the early hours of this Friday his wish that Leo Messi, with whom the Barça club has “a moral debt”, can finish his career “with the Barça shirt”.

“Messi’s stage at Barça did not end as we all wanted, it ended very conditioned by economic reasons,” Laporta said in New York, in statements released this Friday by the Spanish press.

“I think that Barça has a moral debt with Leo Messi in this sense, we would like the end of his career to be with the Barça shirt and being applauded by all the fields wherever he goes”, considered the Barça president.

It is about to be a year since August 8, 2021, when Messi gave a press conference to say goodbye to Barcelona in tears, after 16 years in the first team in which he won 34 titles.

“I would have liked to say goodbye in another way: I never imagined my farewell because the truth is that I didn’t think about it,” said the Argentine star, whose transfer to PSG was announced a few days later.

– ‘An aspiration’ –

Laporta then explained that he had been forced to let Messi go due to the club’s disastrous financial situation and LaLiga’s salary cap rules.

The president of Barça now declared his desire to see Messi dressed as a Barça player again, although he made it clear that “this is an aspiration, nothing has been discussed”.

“It is an aspiration that I have as president of Barça and that I would like to see happen because I have also been responsible for this ending that it has had,” Laporta explained.

“I think it’s a provisional end because I think we’ll make this aspiration we have come true”, added the Barça president.

Laporta responded to the press in this way after this week some Spanish media indicated that the Barça coach, Xavi Hernández, would have asked the club’s management to study the possibility of having the Argentine again, who ends his contract with PSG in June 2023.

Asked about the signing of Jules Koundé made official just a few hours earlier, the Barcelona president assured that “we are trying to comply with the coach’s wishes.”

“We are happy with the decisions we are making to strengthen our squad and make a very competitive team that can participate in all competitions with the intention of winning them,” said Laporta.

– Thinking about more reinforcements –

After the arrivals of Franck Kessié, Andreas Christensen, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Koundé, Laporta did not rule out that there may be more additions.

“We have reinforced the forward, the midfield, the defense, I’m not telling you that there isn’t some other addition because, depending on how the player registration process goes, we’ll see if we can make any more additions, which would strengthen the defensive line,” he said.

The Spanish press has been pointing out for days that Barça would be interested in Chelsea wingers Marcos Alonso and César Azpilicueta.

Faced with the surprise expressed by the Bayern Munich coach, Julian Nagelsmann, about how a Barça with financial emergencies could make these signings, Laporta considered that he did it “out of ignorance”.

“It is true that a year ago Barça was in a critical situation, but we have already left the hospital with the (economic) levers”, said Laporta in reference to the transfer for 25 years of 25% of the club’s league television rights azulgrana to an American fund.

For this transfer operation “we have accounted for 667.5 million euros (682 million dollars)”, explained the Barça president.

“Possibly they do not calibrate that Barça is a club that has 122 years of history, Barça’s assets have a great value, higher than other clubs,” Laporta added.

“Everyone knows what they have to do and, if I don’t get involved in what others do, I would ask them not to get involved in what we do,” he concluded.
