Johann Zarco: “Nakagami crash was not a racing accident” / MotoGP

Takaaki Nakagami was lucky not to be seriously injured in the Barcelona MotoGP race. Shortly after the start, the Japanese crashed and took Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Rins out of the race.

The week before, Suzuki works driver Alex Rins fell after touching Taka Nakagami (Honda). The stewards in Mugello saw the incident as a racing accident. In Barcelona, Rins injured his arm, and Nakagami also had to go to the hospital after the crash. The race director again rated the crash as a racing accident.

Pramac Ducati driver Johann Zarco described the procedure in detail as an outsider. “At Friday’s safety commission meeting in Barcelona, Rins asked our opinion on the incident involving Nakagami in Mugello when he fell after being touched. We drivers almost all agreed that Nakagami didn’t make a mistake at Mugello. So a penalty in this situation would not have been appropriate, although we know that Taka can sometimes overtake very aggressively. But he couldn’t do anything in Mugello,” said the Frenchman.

“Unfortunately, at the start in Barcelona, he lost all our encouragement because Nakagami caused this fall,” Zarco clarified. “It’s a shame for him.”

The Ducati rider added: “To describe this incident as a racing accident is incorrect. He completely missed the braking point; he was way too fast at this point. It is not correct that the race directors do nothing for the next race in this case. As I said, he gambled away a lot among us drivers.”

Zarco himself has been criticized several times. The two-time Moto2 World Champion touched Franco Morbidelli at turn 2 at top speed during the 2020 MotoGP race at the Red Bull Ring. Both riders lost control of their bikes and fell. The bikes crossed the track at high speed, missing the two Yamaha factory riders Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi by a hair’s breadth. Zarco then received a pit lane penalty for the following race.
