JO-2020 – Germans leave the field denouncing racist remarks

The German Olympic team left the field after 85 minutes of play in a friendly against Honduras, denouncing racist remarks made against their defender Jordan Torunarigha.

The Germans left the lawn.

“The match ended 5 minutes before the end with a score of 1-1. The German players left the field after Jordan Torunarigha was the victim of racist remarks, ”tweeted the German Federation (DFB). “When one of our players is a victim of racism, playing is not an option,” said German team coach Stefan Kuntz.

The Honduran federation, for its part, alleged on Twitter a “misunderstanding on the ground” during the meeting, the last of the Mannschaft before its entry into contention in the Olympic tournament. The Germans, silver medalists in 2016, start on July 22 against defending champions Brazil.

Torunarigha had already denounced, in February 2020, monkey cries uttered in the stands by supporters of Schalke 04 during a German Cup match with his club, Hertha Berlin. His reaction on the ground had at the time earned him to be excluded, fueling the recurring controversy over racism in the stadiums.
