United pro destroys season bet at the very last second
| Reading time: 2 minutes
A brave tipster was certain before the Premier League season: Jesse Lingard, striker at Manchester United, will not succeed either goal or template. 37 games and 98 minutes the bet seems to work, then a goalkeeper blunders.
Jesse Lingard took a lot of time. For a long time, it looked as if the striker would not be able to score a single point over the entire season in the Premier League. In 21 games, Lingard went off the pitch for Manchester United without a goal or an assist.
But in his 22nd season, Lingard scored a goal in the 2-0 (0-0) of the English champions against Leicester City. Thanks to his goal in the eighth minute of injury time, United returns to the Champions League after a year of absence.
The goal scorer, his teammates and coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were correspondingly delighted. But Lingard’s goal at the very last second of the season also destroyed the dream of a daring tipster.
A betting slip appeared on the Internet shortly after Manchester’s victory. Before the season, the owner had put £ 10 (10.97 euros) on Lingard’s failure to score or assist the entire season.
Seconds were missing for the successful bet
The tipper had a total of 37 games and 98 minutes to hope for his win of around 735 euros, then the dream burst only because Leicester’s goalkeeper thrashed in front of his own goal and Lingard was allowed to push in 2-0 without hesitation. Another betting enthusiast missed out on a profit of almost 150 euros.
Manchester United took the lead after a penalty from Bruno Fernandes (71 minutes). After a red card for Leicester City in added time, Lingard finally struck.
The Foxes now have to be satisfied with the Europa League because Chelsea FC passed on Sunday and qualified fourth for the premier class. Aston Villa was able to cheer in the fight against relegation.
Chelsea also in the Champions League
Chelsea, opponent of Bayern in the Champions League round of 16, thanks to Mason Mount (45. + 1) and Olivier Giroud (45. + 4) won in parallel with 2: 0 (2: 0) against Wolverhampton Wanderers. “That means a lot to me,” said coach Frank Lampard, who is in his first season as Chelsea coach in the final of the FA Cup against Arsenal.
Chelsea’s win against Wolverhampton also benefited Tottenham Hotspur, who went past the Wolves with a meager 1-1 (1-0) at Crystal Palace and started sixth in the Europa League.
In the end, the Premier League bosses should also be satisfied. Football operations in England had been interrupted from March 13 to June 17 due to the Coronavirus crisis. In the meantime, there had even been discussions about early termination or staging of the remaining games on neutral ground.
