Amazon founder Jeff Bezos told the story of his Cuban adoptive father on Wednesday before the Judicial Committee of the United States Chamber.

In his statement to members of the Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Law Subcommittee, the world’s richest man shared the story of his origins and how the education his two parents gave him was instrumental in his successes.

“My dad is called Miguel. He adopted me when I was four years old. He was 16 years old when he came to the United States from Cuba as part of Operation Pedro Pan, shortly after Castro took over, “he revealed.

“My dad came to America alone. His parents felt that he would be safer here. Her mother imagined that the United States would be cold, so she made him a jacket sewn entirely from cleaning cloths, the only material they had on hand. We still have that jacket; it hangs in my parents’ dining room, ”he explained.

“My father spent two weeks at Camp Matecumbe, a refugee center in Florida, before being transferred to a Catholic mission in Wilmington, Delaware. He was lucky to get to the mission, but even so, he did not speak English and did not have an easy path. What he did have was a lot of determination and determination ”, he specified.

“He received a scholarship to the university in Albuquerque, which is where he met my mother. You receive different gifts in life, and one of my great gifts is my mom and dad. They have been incredible role models for me and my brothers throughout our lives, ”he stressed.

Bezos did not forget his mother, who had him when he was just a 17-year-old high school student living in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“Being pregnant in high school was not popular in Albuquerque in 1964. It was difficult for her,” she admitted.

Despite the obstacles at school, he finished high school, although at his graduation he was not allowed to go on stage with his classmates to collect his diploma.

Determined to pursue her education, she enrolled in night school, choosing teacher-led classes that allowed her to bring a baby to class. It would appear with two canvas bags: one full of textbooks and the other full of diapers, bottles, ”she described.

“The seed money for Amazon.com came primarily from my parents, who invested a large portion of their savings in something they did not understand. They were not betting on Amazon or the concept of an Internet bookstore. They bet on their son. I told them that I thought there was a 70 percent chance that they would lose their investment, and they did it anyway, “he said.

“Unlike many other countries in the world, this great nation in which we live supports and does not stigmatize corporate risk taking. I walked away from a steady job in a Seattle garage to find my startup, fully understanding that it might not work. It seems like yesterday I was driving the packages to the post office, dreaming that one day we could afford to pay for a forklift, ”he said.

Bezos, who days ago saw his fortune grow by $ 13 billion in one day, has publicly shown his admiration for his father on multiple occasions.

Last Father’s Day he honored him with heartfelt words on his Instagram account, along with an image of both laughing out loud. “My father came here from Cuba only when he was 16 years old and did not speak English. He adopted me when I was four and never looked back. I love you, dad, ”wrote the 56-year-old businessman.
