The Icelandic director Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson, who presented himself with the production of the play “Die Edda” in Vienna’s Burgtheater in 2019, is now staging there with Maria Happel in the leading role as Prospero Shakespeare’s late work “The Tempest” (premier March 12, 2022). How to read this play today and in view of the current war events in Europe, why in Iceland the theater is much more accessible and therefore has a higher status in people’s lives, how Peer Gynt remains linked to his own biography throughout his life and why he is not the Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson tells Katharina Menhofer that he was the right man for the Berlin Volksbühne, which he helped direct as acting director during the house’s most difficult times.
