Ironman Hawaii also in Kona in 2023 with two days of racing

Ironman, in cooperation with local and state authorities in Hawaii, today announced that the 2023 Ironman World Championship will also be held in a two-day format in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The race days will be October 12th and 14th, 2023. With the continuation of the two-day format, which was held for the first time this year, the independent race day for the women’s competition is to be firmly established. In addition, 1,200 Kona slots are to be made available for women in the future.

“The County of Hawaii and Ironman have long worked closely together to ensure this global event is conducted safely and with due respect for the needs of athletes, Hawaiians and visitors from around the world,” said Hawaii’s Mayor, Mitch Roth. “With the 2022 Ironman World Championship taking place over two days in October, the County of Hawai`i is excited to once again host these champions in Kailua-Kona and Kohala and looks forward to another epic Ironman World Championship in Year 2023. The partnership with Ironman is a proven one and we are grateful and humble that the culture here has infused the culture of Ironman and the aloha spirit and Holomua motto – move forward – for the Ironman season 2023 reflects.”

More Kona slots overall – the proportion of women is to be increased significantly

Dedicated women’s and men’s race days will also now result in increased qualifying opportunities, including expanded slot allocations at regional championships, as well as increased opportunities for women at 17 Ironman races worldwide designated as Women For Tri events. The following races are planned: In 2022: Ironman Chattanooga, Ironman Arizona, Ironman Western Australia; In 2023 Ironman New Zealand, Ironman African Championship – South Africa, Ironman Texas, Ironman European Championship – Hamburg, Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship – Cairns, Ironman Coeur d’Alene, Ironman France, Ironman UK, Ironman Vitoria-Gasteiz, Ironman Lake Placid, Ironman Kalmar, Ironman Ireland, Ironman Mont-Tremblant, and Ironman Copenhagen.

These “Women For Tri” events are designed to further increase the proportion of women in the sport of triathlon while providing more than 1,200 additional opportunities to qualify for the Ironman World Championship. Events were selected based on a number of factors including the time of year, the regional racing calendar and the prospect of increasing female participation based on an already relatively high proportion of women.
