The inmates of Guayama Correctional Complex On Tuesday they started a downed arms strike and a hunger strike in the face of an alleged pattern of abuse of power and rights violations by the institution's superintendency.
The group, which communicated the demonstration through a press release, demands to speak directly with the secretary of the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (DCR), Eduardo Rivera Juanatey, to denounce the situation.
"The reason for the strike is the abuse of power, violations of rights, abuses and suspensions of privileges for no reason, ordered by Superintendent Edward Garcia and Commander Rivera", the inmates indicated.
According to the group, the prison superintendent was transferred from Las Cucharas de Ponce prison to this institution after the death of correctional officer Pedro Rodríguez Mateo in August at the hands of a prisoner in that prison.
"We denounce that since they arrived, decisions are taken that go against the rights of the inmates, as if our institution were responsible for what happened in Ponce, when this prison has been a model in discipline, according to the public policy of this administration", the inmates established.
Among the complaints of the inmates is the alleged elimination of the Family Committee, poorly made food, lack of items in stores located inside the prison and problems in the provision of medical services.
“The population of Guayama 296 requests the presence of the Secretary of Correction, because our discipline during all these years has been excellent. We have maintained an effective dialogue to maintain an atmosphere of peace and a good quality of life, so that now this new staff comes to abuse their power without having violated administrative norms ”, the group said.
The inmates distributed their complaints through an email, but did not sign it for fear of reprisals, transfers and filing of complaints.
The new day requested a reaction from the DCR, but no response has yet been received.
