In Spanish: pathology is not synonymous with disease

The Fundéu indicates that pathology means ‘part of medicine that studies diseases’ and ‘set of symptoms of a disease’, according to the Academy, so that it can only be considered synonymous with disease in non-specialized use.

Strictly speaking, cystic fibrosis is a disease, whose pathologies will be its symptoms: high fevers, cough, stomach pain or low weight.

Thus, in specialized use, and according to the observation included in this regard in the Dictionary of medical terms of the Royal National Academy of Medicine, in the first examples it would have been preferable to write disease.

However, it is possible to use pathology as a synonym for disease in general use, as reflected in dictionaries such as the General Dictionary of Vox or the Clave.

  • ICU patients due to covid: younger, more serious and without previous pathology.
