In Bègles, the tiger brigades hunt mosquitoes

No, the green mayor Clément Rossignol-Puech does not take himself for Georges Clemenceau and no it is not a police squad, but a tiger mosquito proliferation campaign.

Last Saturday, about fifteen inhabitants of the town received training to learn how to eradicate the invasive insect. In turn, they will go and preach the good word to their neighbors. They are citizen-ambassadors: the Bègles tiger brigades.

Standard nom du suspect: Aedes albopictus, origin: Southeast Asia, size: five millimeters. Distinctive sign: wears white rings on the legs and thorax. The tiger mosquito landed in the Bordeaux metropolitan area in 2013. Since then, it has made its nest in all the gardens.

It is a public health problem because these insects are vectors of diseases such as dengue fever, zika and chikungunya – Christophe Courtin, coordinator at the Bordeaux Métropole mosquito control center

Philippe decided to join the Tiger Brigades because “since last year”he said “We can no longer enjoy the garden. We get attacked in the middle of the day. It’s no longer possible”. Its mission in particular: to explain to neighbors that it is necessary to regularly empty the containers filled with water to kill the larvae. “If everyone gets started, we can really change things”, explains Georges.
