MEXICO CITY., October 10, 2021.- The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) has 36 Third Level hospitals that treat acute conditions that require immediate surgical resolution, traumatic pathologies, victims of accidents and injuries or diseases of different organs, and chronic conditions that will require permanent attention.
The main chronic conditions that are treated at the Third Level, made up of 25 High Specialty Medical Units (UMAE) and 11 Complementary Medical Units, are cancer, heart, orthopedic, metabolic, cardiovascular, kidney, ophthalmological, neurological, pneumopathy, rheumatic diseases , diseases of the genito-urinary tract, sleep disorders, balance, among others.
The Social Security UMAE are also assistance centers for victims in cases of earthquakes, explosions, fires and hurricanes, they have a Robotic Diagnostic and Radiosurgery Center, with the National Radioneurosurgery Service, and a brain tumor research laboratory.
Within the installed capacity there are 7,829 beds for hospitalization, 712 for intensive care, 407 for adults, 194 for neonates and 111 for minors; 584 stretchers in observation areas of the emergency services and continuous admission, 286 operating rooms, 373 laboratory combs and 1,47 specialty offices.
In these Third Level of care hospitals, preventive, curative and rehabilitation medical assistance is provided through highly trained health personnel, which includes expert doctors in more than 70 specialties, as well as nurses and specialist nurses, chemists, nutritionists , social workers, among others.
The specialized health staff offers the beneficiary the best diagnostic and therapeutic options, according to the recommendations suggested by the best scientific evidence, through operating rooms, Transplant Units, Intensive Care Units, Burns, Metabolic, and a large number of equipment installed with the most advanced technology.
This installed capacity of the Institute is complemented by the use of state-of-the-art technology applied to health, in all stages of care.
The UMAE and Complementary Medical Units are equipped for the integral management of visual health, diagnosis of complex diseases that affect different devices and systems; and cardiovascular disease.
The Third Level units have 151 of the best incubators in the world for newborns requiring intensive or intermediate care.
For the evaluation and treatment of patients with various surgical pathologies, there are tools that allow to carry out minimally invasive procedures, such as lithotripters, laparoscopes, surgical microscopes, and other tools.
The hospital infrastructure includes various equipment that allows diagnostic complementation such as gamma-cameras, computerized axial tomography devices that allow studies as sophisticated as CT angiography, ultrasonography, magnetic resonance, fixed and portable X-ray equipment, endoscopes, among others. .
Faced with catastrophic diseases such as cancer, the equipment of the UMAE allows to carry out studies of timely detection, treatment, application of chemotherapy and care in pain clinics and palliative care for the treatment of cancer patients.
In the care of beneficiaries with various pathologies that are complicated or exacerbated and require critical care, there are tissue transplant and burn units; In addition, for those who need to rehabilitate and reintegrate into their family and work environment, there are physical medicine and rehabilitation services.
Specialized medical care, accompanied by the use of state-of-the-art technology, in combination with the training of human resources in health, has governed and will govern the work of the Institute’s Third Level hospitals.
