Mars is increasingly populated, although not by humansbut of robots that we have sent and they are working on the ground or in orbit of the red planet. Latest: The European Space Agency’s Mars Express orbiter reveals a unique feature of geology.

As they have been called, we are facing something like a giant “claw mark”, a kind of scratches or grooves that are part of a giant fault system on Mars known as Tantalus Fosase.

All that said, the photograph is not a typical photo, rather it is the result that was generated from a digital terrain model of Mars using the color channels of the high-resolution stereo camera on ESA’s Mars Express. . The ground resolution of these images is approximately 18 meters/pixel and the images are centered at approximately 43°N/257°E. North is to the right.

The ESA it also explains that Tantalus Fossae runs along the eastern side of a relatively flat and sprawling Martian volcano called Alba Mons, the largest of its kind on the planet whose volcanic flow fields extend at least 1,350 km. According to the ESA:

These trenches were created when Alba Mons rose from the planet’s crust, causing the area around it to warp and break apart. The Tantalus Fossae faults are a great example of a surface feature known as grabens. Each trench was formed when two parallel faults opened, causing the rock in between to fall into the resulting void.
