“I attacked him because he attacked Islam”

The writer’s attacker granted an exclusive interview to the “New York Post” from prison

The 24-year-old from New Jersey who attacked author Salman Rushdie with a knife in New York on Friday, August 12, said from the Chautauqua County Jail, where he is now, that he was “amazed that he survived. ” During the interview, Matar did not want to clarify whether he made the gesture because of the fatwa for “blasphemy” issued in 1989 by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini against the author, who had published the book “I versi satanici” the year before.

Matar then claimed to have read “only a few pages” of Rushdie’s book and denied any contact with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards (the so-called pasdaran).
