  • A hybrid bus caught fire in Zurich-Höngg on Friday evening.

  • The cause of the fire is still unknown.

  • The fire brigade was able to prevent the fire from spreading to the batteries.

  • “Such an event is a challenge for the fire brigade because every second decides the extent of the damage,” says the spokesman for Schutz & Rettung Zürich.

A bus number 80 burned on the Winzerstrasse in Zurich-Höngg on Friday evening. Urs Eberle, Head of Communications at Schutz & Rettung Zürich, confirmed on request that the vehicle in question was a hybrid bus. “The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.” Silvia Behofsits, VBZ Vice Director and Head of Corporate Communications: “You can already say that the battery was not affected, as it is on the roof in the front of the bus and not in the rear where the fire broke out.”

It is a great challenge for fire service members when a hybrid bus catches fire. According to Eberle, the reason is that such a vehicle can ignite all around very quickly. In this context, Eberle pays a big compliment to the bus driver concerned: “He had reacted very well and this prevented worse things from happening.” After the fire report, which arrived at 9.45 p.m., the fire brigade was on site very quickly. Time is a very important factor in keeping the fire at bay and putting out a burning hybrid bus. “Such an event is a challenge for the fire brigade because every second decides the extent of the damage,” Eberle continues.

It was possible to prevent the fire from spreading to a house

Thanks to the rapid intervention of everyone involved, it was possible to prevent the fire from spreading to the batteries and the nearby house. However, at least two parked cars were damaged. “One car caught fire and with the second, the damage could not be foreseen in the dark,” Eberle continues.

It is difficult for Eberle to say that burning e-buses are more dangerous than their predecessors, because Schutz & Rettung Zürich was unable to record enough such missions. Until yesterday there was only one other case.
