On Thursday, “Isaias” caused floods and small mudslides in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and caused power outages. In Puerto Rico, roads flooded, trees felled, and telephone and power lines were damaged due to heavy rain. Puerto Rico is still recovering from the effects of previous hurricanes and earthquakes. The National Guard saved at least 35 people, including two newborns. According to authorities, a woman was missing in the town of Rincon who was washed away while trying to drive over a bridge.
In the Dominican Republic, the government warned the population over loudspeakers and called for an evacuation. A person was killed in the storm. Police arrested some surfers in the capital, Santo Domingo, who were accused of violating government storm warnings.
Several corona test sites closed
In Florida, the authorities had already closed several provisional corona test sites that only consist of tents on Thursday due to the approaching storm. The authorities spoke of a “precautionary measure”. However, no evacuation orders have yet been issued.
In the southern American state, 253 corona deaths were reported on Thursday alone. This is a new 24-hour high and the third in a row.
