Tropical storm Ida hit the US Gulf Coast. The coastal areas of Louisiana were the first to be hit by hurricane winds. The National Hurricane Tracking Center said Ida was rated fourth with wind speeds of 150 mph. Powerful waves and torrential rain caused flooding in areas along the sea coast, and many roads were flooded. The storm cut power lines, leaving the whole of New Orleans without electricity. Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards warned that state leaders fear that Ida will become the strongest in at least a century and a half.
