How to fix corrupted system files on Windows 11

It can happen that important system files of your Windows installation get damaged or lost. Fortunately, there are two built-in Command Prompt tools that can help with this. Deployment Image Servicing and Management can repair the system image and the System File Checker can then fix the issues.

In principle, there are no risks associated with the process, but it is always recommended that you regularly back up your system. To get started, the Command Prompt must be opened as administrator, this can be done by right-clicking on the icon in the Start menu.

DISM consists of three commands: CheckHealth can quickly detect damage, ScanHealth performs a thorough check and RestoreHealth can fix the problems. Copy one of the three lines below, paste it and press Enter to run the command. This may take several minutes.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

The last step automatically downloads and replaces the corrupted files from the Windows Update servers if necessary. However, sometimes this does not work and it is necessary to supply the correct files manually. To do this, go to the Windows website and download the correct iso image, it is important to choose the same version and language as you are currently using. Then enter the command below with the file path of your download.

 DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /[bestandspad]

After that, these files are used to perform the repairs. To solve the problems caused by a wrong setup of your system, you can use the command below.

SFC /scannow

Any errors are now looked up and fixed. If you’re curious about the logs, they can be found by entering one of the commands below.
