There are certain things you can expect and want from a movie about Gucci’s family and empire and all the controversy that goes with it, especially when it’s directed by the legendary Ridley Scott.
House of Gucci stars Academy Award nominee Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, also known as Lady Gaga. Oscar nominee Adam Driver, Oscar winner Jared Leto, Oscar winner Jeremy Irons, Oscar nominee Salma Hayek (first Mexican actress to be nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actress category) and another living legend and winner of the Oscar Al Pacino.
Trailers and commercials advertise a movie about money, power, family, betrayal, sex, loyalty, scandal, ambition, and murder, and the movie can be expected to deliver on everything it promised. A movie based on a book called “The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamor, and Greed” (by Sara Gay Forden) has exactly all of that and much more.
While the movie lives up to expectations and maybe even exceeds them, the best thing about the movie is the performances of all the great actors involved, of course the jobs are made much easier thanks to a good script by Becky Johnston and Roberto Bentivegna. Gaga, Driver, Leto, Irons, Hayek and, of course, Pacino, interpret their characters so well that they achieve their purpose of falling ill and even cause hatred for how disgusting they are. They are so disgusting that I assure you that you would not want to be in the same room with any of these characters in real life. One is worse than the other. And even if you want to feel sorry for them when their inevitable downfall comes, you can’t.
House of Gucci it has a good acting, a libretto and a brilliant direction. All the actors have great chemistry with each other. Lady Gaga is devious enough, but also quite understanding. Driver is incredibly charming and truly captures what it means for someone to be trapped between a rock and a hard place by their partner and family while also trying to discover and achieve their own goals and desires. Leto could be the one stealing the show. He is so wonderfully pathetic, just an absolute fool who seems to do nothing right and mostly doesn’t realize it, adding some humor to the film, though he still has a much darker comedic undertone. Irons and Hayek don’t have much screen time, but they make good use of the time they do have. There really is no actor like Al Pacino. Pacino delivers one of his best performances. He’s clearly having a lot of fun and you can’t help but smile the entire time he’s on the screen.
Speaking of directing, after decades of conducting at a high level, countless successes and award accolades, Ridley Scott continues to cement his legacy as one of the all-time greats even at age 83. He has such a clear and distinct vision, he takes a script that’s already great, an almost absurdly talented team of actors, ties it all together in a way that only he can and the end result is nothing short of stellar. Not to mention, a soundtrack so good it almost feels like a cheat. Between that, the incredible production, the costume design, you are immediately transported to the 70s, 80s and ultimately the 90s and you enjoy every second. Despite being something we’ve seen many of the last few years, it still feels fresh and fun.
If you plan to go see Houses of Gucci, and you are not aware of the real life events that the movie is about, I recommend that you stay that way. There may be some predictable elements, but you can also be wrong about how, why or when they occur. The movie also does a phenomenal job of making you worry and even after you know what’s coming. House of Gucci It is one of the most complete films of the year, from top to bottom and with an excellent editing.
