It remains to be seen which one and how many fighters from New Mexico will ride in the octagon at the Santa Ana Star Center on February 15th.
Holly Holm is one of those who will not do it.
Holm (12-5) is booked on January 18 in Las Vegas, Nevada, on UFC 246 for his bantamweight rematch with Raquel Pennington of Colorado Springs (10-7).
The story was first reported by Mike Bohn of USA Today and mmajunkie.com.
Lenny Fresquez (Albuquerque), a long-time local agent and promoter, told the Journal that his fighter had been hired to fight on UFC 246, but said he could be transferred to the UFC card on Feb. 15 at the Center.
Fresquez told the Journal by SMS on Monday that this possibility was conceivable, but Pennington apparently had a time conflict – "a wrestler coach or something like that," he wrote.
The reference is unclear, but Jason Kutz, Pennington coach, is coaching the main fight at Fountain-Fort Carson High School in Colorado Springs. Pennington may be a volunteer assistant.
The Colorado Girls' Tournament is the weekend of February 15th. The boys' tournament is the following weekend.
Holm beat Pennington by split decision at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 28, 2015, at the UFC's debut in Albuquerque Southpaw.
A rematch was scheduled for October 5 this year in Melbourne, Australia, but the fight was canceled due to a thigh injury suffered by Holm at the training.
The Jan. 18 card is marked by a fight between Donald Cerrone (36-13) Edgewood, former teammate Holm Jackson-Wink, and the Irish Conor McGregor (21-4).
With respect to the February 15 Rio Rancho map, the UFC made no announcement about the training. But Albuquerque's flyweight, Ray Borg (12-4), has confirmed online information that he will face Brazilian Rogerio Bonterin (16-1) that night.
Sherdog and Tapology, two MMA websites, report a battle between flyingweight Montana De La Rosa (10-5) of Arlington, Texas, and Italy's Mara Romero Borella (12-6) booked for the Star Center.
