People living with HIV are at risk of having the severe form of Covid-19 or even of dying. This is the result of a study conducted by the WHO on a population of more than 15,000 people who are infected with HIV. These people, who live in 24 countries, are on average 45 years old, and were mostly taking antiretrovirals before starting treatment for Covid.
According to our information, more than a third of this sample developed a severe form of Covid. The same source indicates that almost 23% of patients unfortunately lost their lives in the hospital. Through a statement, the WHO said that “HIV infection is a significant risk factor for both severe and critical forms of Covid-19 at the time of hospitalization, and for hospital mortality“.
“The international community must do more to ensure that countries heavily affected by HIV have immediate access to Covid vaccines. It is unacceptable that less than 3% [de la population] of the African continent received one dose of vaccine and less than 1.5% had two“, Said for his part, Adeeba Kamarulzaman, president of the IAS (International AIDS Society)
