The Japanese-born singer Hiroshi Amako won the final of the third International Helmut Deutsch Competition on Saturday evening in the Schönbrunn Palace Theater. He prevailed in the jury chaired by pianist Helmut Deutsch from among 69 participants from 33 countries and received prize money of 10,000 euros. He is also invited to give concerts with Helmut Deutsch in the 2021/22 season.
The second prize (5,000 euros) went to the baritone André Baleiro, the third prize (two gold Philharmonic coins worth 3,000 euros) to the baritone Michael Arivony, who also won the audience award (1,500 euros). The Zemlinsky Prize worth 2,000 euros went to Jerilyn Chou (soprano) and Michaela Sara De Nuccio (pianist).
The International Helmut Deutsch Lied Competition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw) is, according to the organizers, “Vienna’s first and only regular competition for singers that is exclusively devoted to the songs of Austrian composers”. “I very much welcome the fact that precisely this area is being strengthened internationally through the Helmut Deutsch Lied Competition and that in addition to the great masters of the Viennese lied repertoire, less well-known lied literature is also brought into focus every year,” said mdw Rector Ulrike Sych at the weekend Broadcast cited.
