On September 16, a tragic death occurred in Kenya near Lake Victoria. A child playing with other children on the lakeshore was grabbed by a hippopotamus and dragged out into the water. Videos of the incident are now going around the world.
Adults present threw stones and pieces of wood at the animal, but it did not let go of the boy. Shortly afterwards the hippopotamus appeared under the water.
Increased attacks by hippos
The local authorities were later able to recover the boy’s body and only confirm his death. His serious injuries are named as the cause of death.
The Kenyan Wildlife Service announced that hippopotamus attacks in this region have been reported on an increasing basis recently. A local resident said that three people were attacked by hippos in June but survived with injuries. (eb)
