How do we recognize it?

The tiger mosquito is characterized by its white stripes. It is also slightly smaller and slower than the classic mosquito. Its bites are more painful and its scope makes it particularly boring. Indeed, unlike the traditional mosquito which bites especially in the evening and at night and sleeps during the day, the tiger mosquito attacks in the morning and at the end of the afternoon. Moreover, even if the phenomenon remains rare overall, it is a vector of diseases such as Zika, dengue or chikungunya.

How to avoid getting bitten?

First, it’s important to know that tiger mosquitoes love standing water. It is therefore advisable to empty or close the small containers in your house or garden. They deposit their eggs there that rainwater or watering will then hatch.

Then, it is also advisable to wear light-colored clothes. Tiger mosquitoes prefer dark clothing and bite mostly on the lower legs. We therefore opt for long pants and, if possible, long sleeves as well.

Finally, there is always the use of a repellent. We opt for a model based on DEET dosed at 30 or 50%, or IR3535 dosed at 30%. This toxic solution is not always effective and is even harmful to other species. We therefore prefer a mosquito trap or a mosquito net.
