Health. A first confirmed case of monkeypox infection in France

A first case of infection with monkeypox is confirmed in France, announced the General Directorate of Health. The patient is a 29-year-old man from Île-de-France. As soon as his infection was suspected, he was taken care of and in the absence of seriousness, he is isolated at his home.

He has not traveled to a country where the virus is circulating, health authorities said. For the moment, cases have been detected in the United Kingdom (20 identified Friday noon), Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Italy, Canada and the United States.

A virus that is transmitted by direct contact

In a press release, the Ministry of Solidarity and Health and Public Health France inform that “an in-depth epidemiological investigation is being implemented”. The people who have been in contact with the patient are being identified and will be informed of the action to be taken to limit the spread of the virus.

Monkeypox, or Monkeypox virus, is endemic in Central and West Africa. The virus circulates in animals (rodents and wild animals) and is transmitted sporadically to humans by contact. From person to person, it is transmitted by direct contact with skin lesions or mucous membranes of a sick person, as well as by droplets. Contamination is also possible through contact with objects such as bedding or clothing.

Symptoms in humans are a sudden high fever accompanied by headache and body aches. After about two days, a rash appears and itching is common. The incubation of the disease can range from five to 21 days. The disease, generally benign, most often heals spontaneously, after 2 to 3 weeks. People affected must respect isolation for the duration of the disease to avoid any contamination.
