This explanation was presented by his lawyer, Marcello Perillo, in statements to Italian journalists on Thursday, clarifying that Gabriele Tadini was unaware of the real risk of this decision.
Gabriele Tadini has been in detention since Wednesday morning, when he was arrested along with the owner of the company “Ferrovie del Mottarone”, which manages the cable car, and the director, the three accused of intentional multiple homicide.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Carabinieri have been hearing testimonies from all employees of the cable car that links the municipalities of Stresa and Mottarone in the northern Piedmont region since Tuesday.
Verbania prosecutor Olimpia Bossi, who is conducting the investigations, said on May 26 that “the three detainees had been aware for weeks of the failure of the safety brake system”.
“He didn’t even remotely think it could happen,” said Perillo, adding that Tadini “regrets” and that he never imagined that “the pull cable could break”.
On May 23, when the steel cable of the damaged cabin broke, the braking system did not work.
The cabin where the passengers were following and which was at a distance of five meters from the arrival station ended up sliding, at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour, and was projected 54 meters, hitting the ground where it flipped for more than a dozen meters.
The only survivor of the accident is a five-year-old child who lost his parents, a brother and two great-grandparents.
The child remains hospitalized with a poor prognosis, although he has returned to speech upon waking from an induced coma.
